How was the canyon created?

The western part of the North American Plate collided with two tectonic plates - the Oceanic Plate - 130 million years ago in the Cretaceous period. The thickness of the Oceanic plate is 50 to 100 km.

The North American plate on the other side was relatively light. The North American plate rises to the light oceanic plate and the Oceanic plate begins to sink to the bottom of the North American plate.

As a result of this pressure on the oceanic plate, the light American plate begins to shrink and condense, and at one point the whole of western America begins to swell upwards.

As the soil grows, the water moves away from the bottom of the ocean and the remains of various marine animals remain in the growing soil.

Thus the mountains to the north and the ancient mountains of the Mogulin Highlands to the south are formed which become higher up to 2100 m. above sea level.

Then, 70 million years ago, the Colorado River began to flow over the Mogolan Highlands with ice-melting water. As a result, land erosion started there. The existence of that old river is still understood. Although there is no more water in the river now.

The present-day Colorado River flows from the eastern highlands to the southwest through the Gulf of California. But an examination of the rock samples found on the Old Colorado River showed that the river flowed north from south-central Arizona.

That is, the old Colorado River flowed northeast, just opposite the current Colorado River. How did this reciprocal audience emerge?

Subsequent studies have shown that the high Mongolian Highland suddenly rises to about 8,000 meters. As a result, a huge basin was created. As the south was about to give way, the north became higher. As a result, Colorado, running northeast, changed course and headed southwest.

The current Colorado River is about 6 kilometers from the old Colorado River. How did it happen? The current Colorado River has come down a lot steeper. As a result, the old river has changed its course.

The Colorado River rises 2,700 meters above sea level, falling 3 meters per 600 meters. The amount of erosion here is many times higher than in other rivers due to the steep descent.

 Although the Mississippi River carries ten times as much water as Colorado, it has dropped to only 3 centimeters per 800 meters, so the Mississippi River did not give rise to a deep canyon like the Grand Canyon.

This downpour of the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon still exists in its entirety. If this continues, the depth of the Grand Canyon will increase many times over the next 2 million years. The Grand Canyon will become grander and more glorious.
