Norman Foster Ramsay Jr. was born on 15 August 1927, in Washington DC. He received his BA degree in mathematics from Columbia University in 1935. He did his bachelor's again from Cambridge University, but this time in physics. He received his Ph.D. in physics from Columbia University in 1940. She married Eleanor Jameson in 1940.

During World War II, he led a 3-centimeter-wavelength radar research team at the MIT Radiation Lab for two years. In 1943 he went to Los Alamos to work on the Manhattan Project. At the end of the war, he returned to Columbia University as a professor. 

He contributed to the establishment of the Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York. He moved to Harvard University in 1947 and taught there for the next 40 years. During this time he also worked as a visiting professor at Oxford University and the University of Virginia.

Cherry Ann Murray is the Dean of the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and John A. and Elizabeth S. Armstrong Professor of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

He was president of the American Physical Society in 2009. Murray earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics in 1973 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1978 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Murray has published more than 70 research papers in a peer-reviewed journal. He holds two patents. Prior to his appointment at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, he was the Principal Associate Director for Science and Technology at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
